Nok

History

  • Praven, Iolieth, and Baranta are the only cities within a reasonable geographic frame that survived the orc incursions that started 30 years ago
  • The orcs were united under a single banner for the first time in history — their uber-chief, * Agrakus, stole ancient dark secrets, creating massive steam-powered war machines — divine intervention happened since the orcs were basically destroying everything they came across
  • Nok is now a ghost of what it once was — roads and villages that once sprawled throughout Nok are in ruins, or have been co-opted by dark forces — other cities the size of Praven, Iolieth and Baranta once dotted the region, but are no more
  • Iolieth is ruled by an ancient dragon, and her subjects were more or less safe — even Agrakus knew better than attack them, lest they awaken the ire of that beast
  • Baranta basically rolled over as soon as the orcs showed up — they couldn’t field an army, so they allowed the orcs to use their harbors to set out across the Bay of Meanau
  • Praven was lucky by virtue of being on the peninsula
  • the senate that rules Praven sent for the greatest wizards and sorcerers that they could find, and through no small feat of geomancy, caused the Wall to spring forth from the earth itself as a last bastion against the orc incursion; 200m high and 500m deep of granite; only two entrances known: one intended as entry and exit from the lands around Praven, and the other is a section of the wall destroyed by the orcs
  • Praven’s most recent history has been dictated by the mercantile guilds and trade unions of the city; during the wars against Agrakus, the guilds offered resources to construct the Wall… provided that Praven guaranteed a ⅔ majority of guild- and union-backed seats on the Senate
Pushed through the formation of a private guild-backed training academy — if train, commit no less than 5 years to service to the senate of Praven
  • Prior to the Wall being created, Praven sent out messengers to let the inhabitants of Nok know that the Wall would be built soon, and any that were inside the line where the Wall went up would be granted protection under the laws and rule of Praven — in five days, Praven went from a city of <100k>s share at 5m, crammed together behind the Wall
  • Baranta has a steady population of 700k, of which orcs make up 30% and Iolieth claims 200k as her subjects — many scrape a life out in the wilderness fending off orc war parties or worse
